Strawberry Jam

We’re jamming 24/7 at Strawberry Park, and there is little time to write. When I was young I saw the sun come up in more than one session. Nowadays I turn into a doctor at midnight, but I’ll admit I stretched it a little last night. Oh well, I’m on vacation.

Everyone here speaks the International Language of Music. Frank is from Connecticut, but can “fram a banjer” as well as any mountain man I ever met, and I know a few. A man with a shock of gray hair that favored Doc Watson’s played some fine Monroe mandolin. His name was Kevin and it turned out he played with Kyle Creed in the first Newport Folk Festival. I’m not sure where he was from but his accent was not hillbilly.

In one session, someone complimented my mandolin break. I said, “Bless your heart,” and the jam session came to a halt.

       “Where are you from?”

I didn’t realize I’d said it, or that it was a southern thing. They all got a laugh, but I was treated with as fine a Northern hospitality as any session I’d played in the South.

I’m on vacation, so I’m gonna go play. Ted Lehmann has a big write-up on the festival over at his blog, so y’all check it out. The address is www.tedlehmann.blogspot.com.

More on the book Monday. Having fun. Wish you were here.

I reckon you do have the South in your mouth! Keep those y’alls coming – I’m still a homesick Virginian even after all these years!

      Karen,

I’m so southern I have genuine concern for when my mom reads the cuss words in the book.

I din’t use the real bad ones, but I had no choice but to write what was real.

      Milo,

Thanks for dropping in. If the stats are right a whole lot of folks read but not all that many leave a comment. Having fun and making a bunch of new friends.
