Sierra Hull

Recently a young lady visited my blog who was a musician and had taken up the mandolin.  I realized I had not profiled any female mandolin players, and decided that oversight should be corrected.

There are several excellent female mandolin players out on the circuit.  One up and coming young player is Sierra Hull.  Miss Hull looks like someone who might be on my schedule at the office for a cheerleader physical, but once the kid picks up  a mandolin she is a beast- one of the best  out there.  She was on Merle Fest Mandomania last year, which is a good indication of her stature.

Her CD, ‘Secrets,’ has been a big splash in the bluegrass world.  She not only plays and sings, but writes original material too.  She’s more than just a talented kid-  Sierra is already a seasoned pro.

Check out her web site at www.sierrahull.com.  When folks like Adam Steffey and Sam Bush sing your praises, that tells you what you need to know.  Sierra might be young, but she is already a first rate mandolin player.  Old Doc better keep his day job, but I do enjoy seeing these young ones come along who bring our music to a new audience.

    Hey there Ms. slightly,

It is, and little Sierra Hull is one more giant player. The kid rocks.

Appreciate your visit. I share your love of good books.

Here’s an unusual post for me. Sierra Hull is not only a fine mandolin player and an emerging singer (wait ’til her voice matures), but she’s a real teenage girl. Sierra’s parents, while nurturing her truly fine talent, have insisted on keeping her in public schools, where she’s in her senior year. She says her friends at school know she plays the mandolin, but my general sense is that they have no real idea the impact she’s had on our little niche in the world of country and roots music. She has an impish smile and no hint on the prima donna in her. She’s just a great kid who happens to be one of the best mandolin players anywhere. – Ted

    Ted,

I know Sierra only by her mandolin playing, but I am not surprised to hear she is an overall solid and grounded young lady. She comes across that way from the stage. I’m sure her folks are very proud of her.

    Ms. Pande,

Yeah, Sierra reminds me a bit of my daughter- a young lady to be proud of. (Of course I could be accused of being prejudiced, but it isn’t true.)
